Beverley McKee, CPDT-KA – Owner, Certified Dog Trainer and Group Dog Walker
Hi, my name is Beverley McKee and I am the owner and founder of Petunia and Company Professional Pet Care Services. My love of animals began at a very early age. My childhood, teens and young adulthood were spent mostly in or around a barn, where I trained and competed around the province in Hunter/Jumper competitions. During those
years, I always had my childhood pet dog Sprite (a somewhat portly miniature schnauzer) by my side and my mother and I were guilty of rescuing and sneaking home any number of barn cats to nurture along the way.
After university, I spent a number of years in the corporate world, but my morning and evening walks with my dogs were always the highlight of my day. I became interested in positive reinforcement training, learning as much as I could about clicker training, operant conditioning and classical conditioning. My interest grew less toward correcting an unwanted behaviour, but more toward changing a dog’s emotional response to external stimuli or antecedents and generalizing good behaviour through instilling confidence, positive reinforcement and relaxation, not through fear of reprisal. In 2017, I earned the professional designation of CPDT-KA through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. In 2018, I became one of the first certified dog trainers in the area to obtain the dog trainer Fear Free Professional certification through FearFreePets.com, an initiative which aims to create low stress veterinary visits.
In 2011, I left the corporate world to fulfil a lifelong dream of entrepreneurship. I launched a dog walking business named Furry Friends Fitness in 2012, and in 2015, with a view to expansion, I renamed my business Petunia and Company Professional Pet Care Services to encompass a wider range of services including dog walking, educational seminars and dog training programs.
I currently live in West Toronto, with my two Australian Cattle Dogs Travis and Petunia, and travel with my dogs to King City on weekends where I continue to work on my equestrian skills. Otherwise, you can find me attending workshops and conferences dedicated to continuing my education in all things dog.
I look forward to meeting your pets!
